West Lake (西湖, Xī Hú) in Hangzhou is China’s most celebrated scenic lake — the subject of more Chinese poetry, painting, and literary admiration than any other natural site. Marco Polo called Hangzhou “the finest and most splendid city in the world” in the 13th century; the lake’s beauty is one reason why.

The lake has been shaped over centuries into an aesthetic composition — the causeways, islands, pagodas, and bridges placed according to classical Chinese landscape design principles. Visiting well means understanding the composition, not just walking around it.

The Ten Scenes of West Lake (西湖十景)

The “Ten Scenes” (十景) concept was formalised in the Song dynasty — ten viewpoints or seasonal experiences that capture the lake’s essential qualities. They’ve been repainted, rewritten, and revisited for 800 years.

The most significant ones for visitors:

1. Leifeng Pagoda at Sunset (雷峰夕照): The Leifeng Pagoda on the southern shore — the current pagoda was rebuilt in 2002 on the foundations of the 977 AD original that collapsed in 1924. Late afternoon when the setting sun catches the bronze-tiled pagoda and the lake turns gold below it is the iconic West Lake image.

2. Melting Snow on Broken Bridge (断桥残雪): In winter, when snow partially melts from the white Broken Bridge, the contrast creates a natural painting. The Broken Bridge is also the setting for the White Snake Legend — China’s most beloved love story.

3. Three Pools Mirroring the Moon (三潭印月): Three stone pagodas in the lake create a moon-in-water reflection pattern. The island of Xiaoying Zhou (小瀛洲) in the middle of the lake — accessed only by boat — is where these pagodas are placed. The boat tour is necessary to access this scene.

4. Orioles Singing in the Willows (柳浪闻莺): The public park on the eastern shore in spring — willows, birds, and the general spring atmosphere that the scene describes.

Boat Tours

Row boat hire: From multiple lakeside points (Zhongshan Park pier, Beishan Road). A flat-bottomed wood rowboat seating 4–6 people. Hire the boat and row yourself, or hire with a boatman. ¥180–240 for a 2-hour circuit.

Official ferries to the island: Regular ferry service to Xiaoying Zhou Island (the Three Pools island). ¥70 return, combined ticket including Leifeng Pagoda entrance.

Private electric boat: More convenient than rowboat, allows stopping at specific points.

Walking Routes

Su Causeway (苏堤)

The 2.8km causeway built by poet-governor Su Dongpo in 1089 AD runs north-south through the lake. Six humpback bridges cross the wetland sections; willow and peach trees line the path. The best walking route for experiencing the lake as a designed composition.

Time: 1.5 hours at a comfortable walk.

Bai Causeway (白堤)

The shorter northern causeway (300m), connecting the city centre to the mid-lake island. Named for the poet Bai Juyi who also served as governor. The double row of peach and willow trees alternating along the causeway is the most reproduced lake image in spring.

North Shore Trail

Less walked than the causeways. Beishan Road along the northern shore passes through forested hillside with occasional lake views and access to the Lingyin Temple (灵隐寺, one of China’s most significant Buddhist temples, 1.5km up the valley north of the lake).

Seasonal Highlights

Spring (March–April): Cherry blossom and peach blossom along the causeways. Willow catkins on the water surface. Peak beauty season, peak visitor numbers.

Summer (June–August): Lotus flowers on the lake surface (peak July–August). Humid and hazy, but lotus season is a separate aesthetic category.

Autumn (October–November): Osmanthus (桂花) fragrance season — the distinctive sweet scent of October osmanthus pervades the lakeside. The Manjuelong Osmanthus Garden (满觉陇) is famous for this season.

Winter: Snow scenes. The Broken Bridge snow scene. Very few visitors.
