How to Buy China Train Tickets on 12306 as a Foreigner (2026 Step-by-Step)

Step-by-step guide to booking Chinese train tickets on 12306 as a foreign passport holder — account registration with foreign passport, how to book tickets, seat class guide, how to collect tickets at the station, and the Trip.com alternative for English speakers.

China’s official train booking website, 12306.cn, now allows foreign passport holders to register and purchase tickets directly — a major change from pre-2023 when foreigners had to queue at stations or use third-party services. The process has some quirks but is ultimately straightforward.

This guide walks through the complete process.

Method 1: Direct 12306 App/Website

Setting Up Your Account

  1. Download the 12306 app from the App Store or Google Play (search “12306 tickets”). The app interface is primarily in Chinese but manageable with Google Translate.

  2. Register: Tap “Register” (注册). Select “Foreign Passport” (护照) as ID type.

  3. Enter details: Full name exactly as on passport, passport number, nationality, date of birth.

  4. Phone verification: A Chinese phone number is required for SMS verification. If you don’t have a Chinese SIM yet, use a friend’s number or set this up on arrival.

  5. Verify identity: Foreign passport verification requires uploading a photo of your passport. Processing is typically instant.

Searching and Booking Trains

  1. Search: Enter departure station (英文 or Pinyin, e.g., “Beijing” shows as 北京), destination, and travel date.

  2. Train types:

    • G trains (高铁): Highest speed (300–350km/h), most expensive
    • D trains (动车): High-speed (200–250km/h), slightly cheaper
    • Z/T/K trains: Conventional trains, slower but very cheap for overnight journeys
  3. Seat classes:

    • 商务座 (Business Class): Lie-flat seats, very expensive
    • 一等座 (First Class): 2+2 seating, extra legroom
    • 二等座 (Second Class): 3+2 seating, perfectly comfortable for most journeys
    • 硬卧/软卧 (Hard/Soft sleeper): For overnight journeys — bunks in shared compartments
  4. Payment: Add international credit card (Visa, Mastercard accepted on 12306 in 2026). Some cards may be declined; have a backup method.

  5. E-ticket: Since 2020, most trains use electronic tickets — show your passport at the gate. No need to collect a physical ticket.

Collecting Physical Tickets (if required)

At the station, ticket machines (售票机, automated self-service) have an “international passport” option. Insert passport into the scanner and your purchased tickets will be printed.

Method 2: Trip.com (English Interface)

Trip.com (formerly Ctrip) is the recommended method for visitors who prefer English-language booking:

  1. Go to trip.com, select “Train”
  2. Search exactly as on 12306 — same trains, same seats
  3. Pay in any major currency via credit card
  4. Trip.com sends a confirmation code; collect physical ticket at station with passport (Trip.com purchases don’t generate e-tickets for foreigners as of 2026)

Service fee: Trip.com charges ¥20–40 per ticket convenience fee above face value.

Recommendation: For most international visitors, Trip.com is easier despite the fee. The English interface reduces booking errors significantly.

Understanding the Ticket System

Seat Numbers

Chinese train tickets show: train number, departure/arrival time, class (几等座), carriage (车厢), and seat number (座位). On board, find your carriage number (displayed on the outside of the carriage) and seat number (displayed above the seats inside).

Stored Value Cards (交通卡)

For high-speed trains, you can’t use stored value cards — these are only for metro and city buses. Each train journey requires a separate ticket.

Missed Trains

If you miss your high-speed train, you can take the next train with your ticket but must pay the difference (if any) at the conductor’s office. This “reimbursement check-in” (补票) system works within 2 hours of original departure.

Important Station Notes

Security: Chinese train stations have airport-style security screening — bags through X-ray, walking through metal detector. Allow 30 minutes before departure for this process.

Departure gates: Show your passport + e-ticket QR code or physical ticket at the departure gate to enter the waiting area.

Advance arrival: Arrive at the station at least 30 minutes before high-speed train departure, 45 minutes for major stations (Beijing South, Shanghai Hongqiao) during busy periods.
