Shenzhen’s metro is the gateway for millions of Hong Kong residents and international visitors entering mainland China. With 17 lines and nearly 400 stations, the network covers every border crossing, the airport, major shopping malls and the innovation districts that define the city’s identity. This guide focuses on practical navigation for foreign tourists.

Hong Kong–Shenzhen Border Crossings by Metro

This is the single most important information for Hong Kong-based visitors.

Futian Checkpoint (福田口岸): Located on Line 4 (Longhua Line). Take the Shenzhen metro directly into Hong Kong’s MTR at Lok Ma Chau Station — an integrated border crossing where you pass immigration and board the next train without leaving the building. Operating hours: 06:30–24:00. This is the fastest urban crossing.

Luohu Checkpoint (罗湖口岸): Line 1 (Luobao Line), station Luohu. Connects to Hong Kong’s Sheung Shui MTR station. Older and busier; immigration queues can reach 90 minutes on weekends. Opening hours: 06:30–24:00.

Huanggang Checkpoint (皇岗口岸): 24-hour vehicle and pedestrian crossing, accessible by buses but not directly by metro. Take Line 1 to Gangxia, then transfer to bus.

Shatoujiao Checkpoint: Requires separate permit for most nationalities; not recommended for tourists.

For most visitors, Futian Checkpoint via Line 4 is the best option: fast, air-conditioned, minimal walking.

Airport Connections

Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport (SZX): Served by Line 11 (Airport Line) and Line 20 (automated people mover within airport terminals). From Futian Huazhonglu to the Airport East station takes approximately 30 minutes for ¥12.

Alternatively, you can take the Airport Ferry from Hong Kong’s China Ferry Terminal to Shenzhen Airport — skipping the city entirely. Useful if you’re connecting onward.

Key Lines for Tourists

Line 1 (East–West): From Luohu (HK border) through Lao Jie (old Dongmen market), Da Ju Yuan (arts centre), Huaqiang Bei (electronics) to the western city. Most important line for day-trippers from Hong Kong.

Line 2: Serves the Shekou ferry terminal (access to Hong Kong Shekou Ferry), the OCT Loft creative park and Window of the World (miniature world landmark park).

Line 3: Central–Longgang corridor. Key stop: Huaxin for Dafen Oil Painting Village.

Line 4: Longhua Line, connects Futian Checkpoint and Futian CBD with Longhua district. Essential for Futian border crossing.

Line 11 (Airport Express): Premium line with dedicated cars and airport check-in. Premium fare applies: ¥12–18 from central districts.

Payment Options

Shenzhen is the most cashless city in China. Virtually all metro turnstiles accept:

  • WeChat Pay (scan QR)
  • Alipay (scan QR)
  • Shenzhen Tong card (深圳通) — reloadable, ¥20 deposit, also works on Guangzhou and Dongguan transit
  • Single-journey tokens (machine, English menu available)
  • Bank card tap (UnionPay, Visa, Mastercard at newer turnstiles)

Foreign visitors with no Chinese payment apps can still buy tokens at every station’s ticket machine with cash or foreign Visa/Mastercard.

Shenzhen stations often have multiple exits (A1, A2, B1, B2 etc.) with different street-level destinations. Check Google Maps or Baidu Maps before exiting — choosing the wrong exit at a large interchange like Futian can mean a 10-minute walk back around.

Announcements are in Cantonese, Mandarin, and English on most lines. Line 11 has bilingual signage throughout.

Bay Area Connections

From Shenzhen, intercity travel in the Greater Bay Area is convenient:

  • Guangzhou: 30 minutes by high-speed rail from Shenzhen North (Line 4/7 to Shenzhen North Station)
  • Zhuhai: 2 hours by high-speed rail
  • Macau: Ferry from Shekou Terminal (Line 2, Shekou Port Station) – 1 hour
  • Hong Kong: Multiple border crossings described above

Working Hours Note

Most Shenzhen–Hong Kong border crossings align with metro operating hours (06:30–24:00). However, the metro itself starts at 06:00 on most lines, so you can arrive at the border just after it opens.

Shenzhen’s metro is modern, fast and very well-signed in English. Even first-time visitors to China find it straightforward—and for day-trippers from Hong Kong, it’s genuinely one of the easiest mainland China experiences available.
