Kanas (喀纳斯) and adjacent Hemu Village (禾木村) in the Altai Mountains of far north Xinjiang represent China’s most pristine alpine wilderness accessible to regular travellers. The combination of untouched boreal forest, a glacially-carved valley lake of exceptional beauty, and one of China’s smallest indigenous communities creates an experience unlike anywhere else in the country.

Kanas Lake (喀纳斯湖) In Depth
The Lake
45 km long, 2.5 km wide, with a maximum depth of 188 metres — one of the deepest lakes in China. The water colour shifts from deep blue in the centre to turquoise in shallower sections, depending on glacier melt content and light angle. No boats except park-operated ferries.
The legend: Local accounts describe sightings of an enormous creature in the lake — nicknamed “Kanas Lake Monster” — visible from the observation platform as large surface shadows. The phenomenon is most plausibly explained by large Hucho taimen (大红鱼), a massive freshwater fish that grows to 2 metres in Kanas Lake, visible from sufficient height as shadow shapes.
Seasonal Transformation
Summer (July–August): Green forest, blue lake, clear skies. Peak visitor season and warmest temperatures.
Autumn (late September–mid October): The reason serious travellers come. The aspen, birch, and larch forests turn simultaneously — a palette of deep gold, copper, and rust that photographers describe as 3-week window of perfection. The reflected autumn colours in the lake surface double the visual effect.
Winter (November–April): Snow-covered, extremely cold (-30°C), limited access. The frozen lake and snow-weighted pine forest have a specific silent beauty; require warm gear and self-reliance.
Observation Points
First Viewing Platform (第一观鱼台, 1,210 m): 45-minute uphill walk from the lakeside boardwalk — the classic view of the lake’s southern end and surrounding forest.
Third Viewing Platform (第三观鱼台, 1,438 m): The highest accessible point — views of the full lake length, the tributary river, and the mountain peaks behind. 2-hour walk from the lake; or take the scenic bus to the drop-off point and walk 40 minutes.
Hemu Village (禾木村)
30 km by 4WD road from the main Kanas area — a Tuwa village of 80 households in an isolated valley at 1,290 metres. The Tuwa people live in horizontal-log izba-style houses (the construction method is identical to Russian Siberian log houses), surrounded by birch and cedar forest.
What makes Hemu unique:
- The village is a working agricultural and pastoral community — the residents keep horses, cattle, and sheep, and the morning fog rising from the valley with horses visible in the mist creates the most atmospheric photographs in Xinjiang
- The log houses are 100–150 years old — genuine living architecture rather than reconstruction
- The autumn colour here can be superior to Kanas proper: the valley position means morning fog fills the bowl, the trees are denser, and the village architecture gives human scale
Sunrise photography: The most celebrated image from Hemu — the morning sunlight coming over the eastern ridge and illuminating the fog-filled valley, with Tuwa log houses and wooden fences visible in the foreground. The river bends in the middle distance; horses move through the mist. This requires arriving at the hillside above the village (15-minute walk from the guesthouse area) before dawn.
Staying in Hemu: Guesthouses (basic homestays in log house compounds) — ¥80–200/person. Meals included. Sleep in a log house, eat Tuwa food (lamb, barley flatbread, fresh yoghurt, pine nut pastries).
Practical Tips
Getting there:
- Fly to Kanas Airport (KJI) from Urumqi (1 hr) or Chengdu (summer season flights)
- Transfer to Kanas scenic area: 2-hour bus or arranged vehicle
- Hemu: separate 4WD vehicle transfer from Kanas (1 hour) or direct from Burqin (布尔津, 2 hrs)
Best timing for autumn: September 25 – October 15 is the peak window; year varies slightly. Book accommodation months in advance for this period.
Park logistics: The Kanas scenic area is large; internal park buses run between major points. Allow 2 nights at Kanas + 2 nights at Hemu as minimum.
