Zhangjiajie (张家界) in western Hunan province contains one of the world’s most singular landscapes — over 3,000 sandstone pillar formations emerging vertically from forest floor, their heights ranging from 200 to 400 metres, many with trees growing from their flat tops and clouds gathering between them at dawn. James Cameron’s design team visited here before making Avatar, and the floating Hallelujah Mountains are an obvious derivative of what you see at Wulingyuan.
But the real thing is better than the film because it’s real — you can touch the rock, walk through the mist, and sit at the edge of a precipice with the pillars extending in every direction.

The Scenic Area Structure
Zhangjiajie National Forest Park and Wulingyuan Scenic Area are sometimes used interchangeably but technically different:
Zhangjiajie National Forest Park (张家界国家森林公园): The first section established, in the south of the area. Contains the most dramatic early views and the Yuanjiajie area (the primary Avatar location).
Tianzi Mountain Scenic Area (天子山): The northern section. Higher elevation, cloud sea views, and the Xiannu Sandbiao viewpoints.
Suoxi Valley Nature Reserve (索溪峪): The middle section, including Yellow Dragon Cave and Ten Mile Gallery (十里画廊).
Tujia Village Area: Cultural heritage adjacent to the natural parks.
A combined ticket covers access to all sections. The area is large — don’t try to see everything in one day.
Best Viewpoints
Yuanjiajie (袁家界): The flat plateau area from which the Avatar Mountains are seen most dramatically. Take the Bailong Elevator (百龙电梯, the world’s tallest outdoor elevator, ¥72) from the valley floor up 326 metres to the plateau rim. From the plateau, walk to the Hallelujah Mountain viewpoint (哈利路亚山) — the primary Avatar reference point.
Tianmen Mountain (天门山): Technically separate from the Wulingyuan area and requires its own ticket, but the glass walkway and cable car are worth the additional visit. The glass walkway on the cliff face is 1,430 metres above sea level.
Yellow Stone Stockade (黄石寨): The southern section. Accessible by cable car (¥72) or on foot (steep climb). Panoramic views from the summit looking over the pillar forest below.
Ten Mile Gallery (十里画廊): A valley floor walk through 5.8km of formations — lower viewpoint compared to the plateau vistas but uniquely atmospheric for being at eye level with the pillars’ bases.
Tianzi Mountain summit: Reached by cable car from the north. The cloud sea views here when conditions are right are among the finest in the park.
Bailong Elevator
The Bailong Elevator (百龙电梯, “Hundred Dragon Elevator”) is a spectacle itself — three high-speed lifts enclosed in a glass-sided tower affixed to the cliff face, rising 326 metres in about 2 minutes. The view ascending is extraordinary — you go from forest floor to cliff-top in moments.
Queue times on weekends and holidays can reach 1–2 hours. Arrive when the park opens to minimise this.
Planning Your Visit
Minimum stay: 2 days. The area is too large for a single day.
Recommended 3-day structure:
Day 1: Arrive, orient. Take the Zhangjiajie National Forest Park south entrance, hike or cable car up to Yellow Stone Stockade, walk the ridge.
Day 2: Bailong Elevator to Yuanjiajie plateau. Walk to the Avatar/Hallelujah Mountain viewpoint. Walk to Tianzi Mountain by connecting trail (3 hours). Cable car down from Tianzi Mountain.
Day 3: Ten Mile Gallery in the morning. Suoxi valley afternoon or day trip to Tianmen Mountain.
Tickets & Fees
Wulingyuan Scenic Area combined ticket: ¥248 (valid 4 days) — covers all major sections.
Individual cable cars: ¥72–80 each way for most cable car sections.
Bailong Elevator: ¥72 up, ¥36 down.
Tianmen Mountain: Separate ticket ¥258, includes cable car and park access.
Getting There
Zhangjiajie Hehua Airport (DYG): Flights from most major Chinese cities. The airport is about 40km from the park entrance.
High-speed train: Zhangjiajie West Station (张家界西) on the HSR network. 4 hours from Changsha, 5 hours from Chengdu, 3 hours from Wuhan.
From the train station to the park: Buses and taxis. About 30–40 minutes to the park entrance at Wulingyuan.
Base Accommodation
Most visitors stay in Wulingyuan town (武陵源), immediately adjacent to the park entrance. Wide range from budget guesthouses (¥80–150) to mid-range hotels (¥300–600). Book ahead for peak season (October, Golden Week).
For the cloud sea views at dawn, staying in the mountain hotels within the park (there are a few options near the Yuanjiajie plateau) is the most effective strategy — you’re already at altitude when the clouds form overnight.
When to Go
October: The most spectacular month — clear sky after summer humidity, potential cloud seas, occasional autumn colour beginning. Very busy.
March–April: Lush green growth, lower visitor numbers, good cloud conditions.
Avoid July–August: Hot, humid, and at peak domestic tourist volume.
