China has romantic destinations that rival any in Asia — candlelit ancient town alleys in Lijiang, the sea of clouds at Huangshan, sunset over West Lake in Hangzhou, the illuminated karst peaks at Guilin reflected in the Li River. The challenge is combining them into a honeymoon itinerary that’s logistically manageable and avoids the romantic-moment-destroying crowds of major tourist sites.

Lijiang Old Town at Night
Lijiang’s old town (丽江大研古镇) in the evening — after the day-tripping tour groups have left — becomes genuinely beautiful. The stone-paved lanes are lit by red paper lanterns; the Naxi wooden architecture of the bars and restaurants is warm-lit; the mountain backdrop of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain is sometimes visible under moonlight.
For couples: A boutique guesthouse in the old town’s quieter alleys (away from the main bar street) provides the base for evening walks and morning exploration before crowds arrive. Book a room with a courtyard and mountain view.
The Naxi cultural context: Naxi society historically featured a matrilineal social structure with “walking marriages” — a romantic rather than institutionalised approach to partnership. This cultural backdrop adds an interesting dimension to the old town experience.
Hangzhou West Lake in Rain
West Lake (西湖) in Hangzhou is at its most romantic in light rain — the mist reduces visibility to a few hundred metres, the lake reflections soften, the pavilions and willow trees appear in silhouette. It’s the scene that inspired thousands of Chinese poems and paintings.
Best combination: Take the sunset boat cruise (6–7pm), then walk the lakeside causeway after dark. The White Causeway (白堤) and Su Causeway (苏堤) are scenic and quieter at night.
Accommodation: Shangri-La Hangzhou (west lake views from certain rooms) or the boutique hotels on the South Lake shore.
Zhangjiajie Cloud Sea at Dawn
The pillar mountains of Zhangjiajie at dawn — when cloud fills the valleys between the columns and the peaks emerge above the white — is one of the most extraordinary landscape photographs in China. And the experience in person is better.
How to see it: Overnight at the Zhangjiajie National Forest Park area hotels. The cloud sea is most common in spring (April–June) and autumn (September–October). Set an early alarm (5:30–6am) and walk to the cliff viewpoints.
Romantic context: The Avatar Mountains were the visual inspiration for one of cinema’s most successful romantic epics — the landscape’s otherworldly quality makes sense in person.
Gulangyu Island, Xiamen
Gulangyu Island (鼓浪屿) — a car-free island 10 minutes by ferry from Xiamen — is one of China’s most genuinely charming small-island experiences. The colonial architecture (the island was a treaty port international settlement), independent coffee shops in converted villas, and absence of motor traffic creates a Mediterranean island atmosphere in subtropical Fujian.
For couples: Afternoon ferry to the island, afternoon wandering through the villa lanes, dinner at one of the seafood restaurants overlooking the Xiamen skyline, evening return under harbour lights.
Yangtze River Cruise Sunset
The light as the Yangtze cruise passes through the Three Gorges in the late afternoon — the sun dropping behind the gorge walls, the river turning gold, the cliff faces shadowing — is genuinely extraordinary for those lucky with weather.
Romantic Experiences Beyond Destinations
Tea ceremony private sessions: In Hangzhou’s Longjing Tea Village or Yunnan’s Pu’er tea areas, a private tea ceremony with a tea master (booked through a hotel or local agency) — learning tea preparation together in a traditional setting — is a genuinely lovely experience.
Hotpot for two: Chengdu-style hotpot at a table overlooking a park or courtyard has a romantic communal dining quality — the shared pot, the interactive cooking, the intimate scale of the meal.
Traditional Chinese Clothing Photography: Many studios in major cities offer traditional Hanfu (汉服) or Qipao (旗袍) photo sessions. The results are memorable and the process of dressing in historical costume together is its own experience.
Sunset from Huangshan Summit: If planning the Huangshan overnight trip, share the sunrise or sunset at the summit pavilion — the cloud sea turning pink with alpenglow is extraordinary.
