Booking China Train Tickets (高铁/动车)
Method 1: 12306 App (Official, Best Price)
The 12306 app (the official China Railway app) now has a foreigner-friendly registration process. As of 2024, you can register with a foreign passport directly.
Setup:
- Download “12306” from App Store or Google Play (search “铁路12306”)
- Register: choose “Overseas User” (境外用户)
- Enter your passport number, name (as it appears in your passport), and phone number
- Verify via SMS
Booking:
- Select departure city, destination, date
- Choose train (G = high-speed, D = fast, Z/T/K = conventional)
- Select seat class (二等座 2nd class, 一等座 1st class, 商务座 Business)
- Enter passenger passport details
- Pay via Alipay or WeChat Pay
Ticket collection:
- E-ticket: since 2020, most trains use e-tickets (电子客票). You don’t need to collect a physical ticket — just show your passport at the turnstile or to the conductor, or use the 12306 app’s scan-to-board feature.
- Physical ticket: at major stations, you can print a physical ticket from self-service machines using your passport.
Best for: Best prices, no booking fees, most complete schedule.
Method 2: Trip.com (Ctrip) — Best for Foreigners
Trip.com (the English version of Ctrip) is the recommended option for travellers who want English-language support.
Advantages:
- Full English interface
- Accepts Visa, Mastercard, Amex, and PayPal
- Customer service in English (phone and chat)
- Handles passport registration automatically
- Shows all available trains including slower options not always shown on foreign search sites
Disadvantage: Booking fee of ¥15–¥30 per ticket on top of the train price.
For most foreign visitors, the booking fee is worth it for the English support and payment convenience.
Method 3: Klook / KKday
These international travel experience platforms now sell China train tickets with even better English support and integrated booking. Fees are slightly higher than Ctrip, but the user experience is more familiar for international travellers. Good option for first-time visitors.
Key Train Information for Travellers
Train types and speeds
| Prefix | Type | Speed | Example route time |
|---|---|---|---|
| G | Gaotie (high-speed) | 300–350 km/h | Beijing–Shanghai: 4.5h |
| D | Dongche (fast) | 200–250 km/h | Beijing–Tianjin: 30min |
| Z | Zhida (direct express) | 160 km/h | Overnight trains |
| T | Tekuai (express) | 120–140 km/h | Older routes |
| K | Kuaisu (fast) | 100–120 km/h | Budget option |
For most city-to-city travel, G trains are the dominant choice.
Seat class comparison
| Class | Chinese | Cost ratio | Features |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2nd class | 二等座 | 1× (baseline) | 3+2 seating, comfortable, recommended |
| 1st class | 一等座 | ~1.6× | 2+2 seating, wider seats |
| Business class | 商务座 | ~3× | Lie-flat seats on some trains, meal service |
| Sleeper (硬卧) | Hard sleeper | 1.2–1.5× (overnight) | 6-berth open compartment |
| Soft sleeper (软卧) | Soft sleeper | 2× (overnight) | 4-berth private compartment |
For day trips: 2nd class is fine and what most Chinese travellers use. For overnight journeys: soft sleeper (soft sleeper berth) gives privacy and comfort worth the price difference.
Booking Domestic Flights
Apps and platforms
Trip.com / Ctrip is again the most foreigner-friendly option, accepting all major international payment cards.
Other options:
- Fliggy (飞猪, Alibaba): competitive prices, requires Alipay
- Qunar (去哪儿): price comparison site, most flights link to Ctrip checkout
- Airline websites directly: Air China (airchina.com.cn), China Southern (csair.com), China Eastern (ceair.com) — all have English versions and accept foreign cards
Domestic flight tips
- Book 2–6 weeks ahead for the best prices on popular routes. Last-minute fares spike dramatically.
- Bring your passport to the airport: domestic travellers use ID cards; foreigners must use their passport for check-in.
- Arrive 90–120 minutes before departure: security and bag-check queues at major Chinese airports are significant.
- Download the airline’s app: China Eastern, Air China, and China Southern apps send real-time gate change and delay notifications.
Comparing train vs flight for common routes
| Route | Fastest train | Flight + airport travel | Train advantage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beijing–Shanghai | 4.5h | 3.5h (door-to-door similar) | Convenience, city-centre stations |
| Shanghai–Hangzhou | 45min | Not worth flying | Train wins |
| Beijing–Xi’an | 4.5h | 2.5h (flight) + 1.5h (airport) | Similar |
| Shanghai–Chengdu | 11h | 3h (flight) | Flight recommended |
| Chengdu–Lhasa | No direct train | 2.5h flight | Flight only option |
Using the Apps at Stations
12306 Boarding Pass
The 12306 app generates a QR code for your e-ticket. At turnstiles, scan the QR code or tap your passport to the reader. Works at most major stations.
Retrieving printed tickets
If you need a physical ticket (for older trains or as a backup):
- Go to the self-service ticket machine (自动取票机)
- Insert your passport or scan the barcode from your 12306 app
- Collect the physical ticket
Left luggage
Most major train stations have left luggage lockers (行李储存) for ¥10–¥30 per item per day. Find them at the exits or arrival areas — maps in the 12306 app show locker locations.
