March is one of China’s best months for travel — the winter cold retreats, spring flowers begin, the Spring Festival crowds have dispersed, and humidity (the curse of Chinese summer) is minimal. The major attraction is the blossom culture: March brings plum (梅花, peaking late February–early March) and cherry blossoms (樱花, mid-March to early April) to central and eastern China.

Weather in March by Region

Central China (Wuhan, Nanjing, Hangzhou): 10–18°C, variable. Classic spring weather — warm days, cool nights, some rain. Perfect for cherry and plum blossom viewing.

South China (Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Xiamen): 18–25°C, humid. Already feels like spring-summer. Jacaranda trees begin flowering in April.

North China (Beijing, Xi’an): 5–15°C, dry. Still cold in early March; warming rapidly by late March. Beijing’s magnolias bloom in late March.

Southwest (Chengdu, Yunnan): 15–22°C (Chengdu slightly cooler). Yunnan is excellent in March — spring flowers, clear skies, before the summer heat.

Tibet and Qinghai Plateau: Still winter-like (−5 to 5°C). Not recommended for general tourism.

Best Destinations in March

Wuhan — Cherry Blossoms (Mid-Late March)

The star destination of Chinese March travel. Full Wuhan Cherry Blossom Guide.

Key date: Peak usually March 15–April 5. The Wuhan University campus requires advance ticket booking; East Lake Cherry Garden does not.

Hangzhou — West Lake in Spring Rain

West Lake in March rain is the landscape that inspired classical Chinese poetry. The spring willow catkins appear on the causeways; early lotus pads emerge on the lake surface; the tea hills begin to turn green as the season’s first Longjing tea (before Qingming, the most valuable harvest) is picked.

Longjing tea harvest (龙井春茶): The week before Qingming (usually late March) is when pre-Qingming Longjing (明前龙井) is harvested — the finest and most prized spring tea. Visiting the Longjing Tea Village during this window allows watching the harvest and buying tea directly from farmers.

Yunnan — Rapeseed Flowers and Ethnic Festivals

Luoping (罗平) in eastern Yunnan (near the Guizhou border) hosts China’s most spectacular rapeseed flower blooms — rolling mountains entirely covered in yellow flowers, usually peaking in late February to mid-March. The scale is overwhelming: 12,000 hectares of continuous rapeseed.

Yi (彝族) Fire Festival and Miao (苗族) markets in Yunnan and Guizhou provinces occur in February–March according to the lunar calendar. Local farmers’ markets and minority festivals in rural Yunnan are often best in the weeks before April when tourism increases significantly.

Guangzhou — Spring Flower Markets

Guangzhou’s flower markets (花市) traditionally occur before Chinese New Year (late January–February) but spring garden centres and flower markets continue through March. The Guangzhou area’s subtropical climate means some flowers are available year-round.

Conghua Hot Springs (从化温泉): The Conghua district north of Guangzhou has natural hot springs combined with spring flower scenery — cherry blossoms and osmanthus in the surrounding hills. A weekend trip from Guangzhou combining hot springs and spring scenery.

Guilin — Least Crowded Window

March is one of Guilin’s best months — temperatures are comfortable (15–22°C), the river level is high from spring rain providing the classic Li River reflection photographs, and crowds are significantly lower than the Golden Week and summer peaks.

Practical: Book Li River cruise tickets in advance but same-day availability is usually possible in March unlike peak season.

Major Events in March

National People’s Congress (NPC) and CPPCC sessions (March 1–15): These annual political meetings in Beijing mean slightly increased security protocols in Tiananmen area. No impact on general visitors but good to know.

Yunnan Yi Torch Festival (彝族火把节) — if it falls in early March by the lunar calendar.

What to Pack for March China

  • Layers: Temperature swings of 12–15°C between morning and afternoon in central China
  • Waterproof layer: Spring rain is common in eastern China March
  • Comfortable walking shoes: Most March activity involves outdoor walking
  • Light down jacket for early March in northern and central areas
