Lijiang Horse Trekking Guide: Tiger Leaping Gorge, Jade Dragon Snow Mountain & Yunnan Routes

Horse trekking from Lijiang — routes to the base of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, through Baisha village and the Yufeng Monastery, and the traditional approach to Tiger Leaping Gorge on horseback. Operators, costs, and what to expect.

Lijiang sits at the base of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (玉龙雪山, 5,596m) in a highland valley at 2,400m elevation. The Naxi minority culture here developed within a mountain landscape — their traditional livelihoods included tea horse road transport and highland pasture herding. Horse trekking in the Lijiang area connects this cultural history with some of Yunnan’s most dramatic mountain and gorge scenery.

Jade Dragon Snow Mountain Horse Trekking

The mountain’s lower slopes (below the tourist cable car areas) are accessible by horse on multiple trails maintained by Naxi family operators. Standard routes:

Baisha Route (白沙线): 2–3 hours from Lijiang old town to Baisha village and the Yufeng Lamasery, through highland meadows and pine forest. Baisha village retains the most authentic old Lijiang architecture (the old town itself is now heavily commercialised). Yufeng Lamasery has a 500-year-old camellia tree (万朵山茶) that flowers February–May.

Blue Moon Valley Perimeter (蓝月谷周边): The famous turquoise glacial lakes at the mountain base (Blue Moon Valley) are accessible by cable car for most tourists, but horse trails approach the valley rim from the east — views of the peaks with less foot traffic. Half-day route.

Meaning Route: Longer treks (full day, ¥400–600 per person) reach the pine forest zone above 3,000m with views of the glacier face and the five summit peaks of the snow mountain.

Tiger Leaping Gorge Horse Option

The classic Tiger Leaping Gorge two-day trek can be done with horse support. Horses carry bags and less-confident hikers over the hardest sections (particularly the “28 Bends” steep ascent on Day 1). Negotiated with guesthouses in Qiaotou village at the trek start.

Cost: ¥200–400 for horse bag carrying; ¥400–600 for a rider with guide for the difficult sections.

Note: The full gorge trail is primarily a walking experience — horse riding is more comfortable but the trail is narrow and requires a horse handler rather than solo riding.

Naxi Horse Operators in Lijiang

Family-run horse operators are found at:

  • The entrance to Baisha village (15 min from Lijiang old town by DiDi)
  • Near the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain south gate
  • At the start of the Tiger Leaping Gorge trek in Qiaotou

Negotiation is normal: Quoted prices to tourists are higher than local rates. Having a hotel or guesthouse introduce you to a specific operator avoids the most inflated tourist pricing.

Equipment provided: Helmets are not standard — bring your own if safety-conscious. Basic Western-style saddles are most common.

What to Prepare

Altitude: Lijiang at 2,400m can cause mild altitude adjustment symptoms. Horse treks going above 3,000m amplify this. Drink extra water, avoid alcohol on Day 1, and acclimatise in Lijiang for one night before any high-altitude trek.

Clothing: Highland Yunnan temperatures are significantly lower than valley China. Even summer mornings on the mountain can be 10–15°C. Layer system essential.

Physical condition: Basic horse trekking requires no riding experience. The horses are accustomed to inexperienced riders and the routes are well-defined.
