Fujian Tulou Day Trip from Zhangzhou
The Fujian Tulou (福建土楼, earthen buildings) are the circular and square communal fortified buildings of the Hakka and Minnan peoples — multi-storey structures housing dozens or hundreds of families in a single self-contained defensive compound. The best clusters are in the mountains of Nanjing County (南靖县) and Yongding County (永定县), approximately 1-2 hours from Zhangzhou.
Nanjing Tulou Cluster (Tianluokeng Scenic Area): The Tianluokeng (田螺坑) cluster in Nanjing County is the most photographed — five buildings arranged in a cluster (four circular, one square) that looks extraordinary from the viewing platform above. The name translates as “Snail Pit” and the layout does look like a spiral when viewed from above.
Entry: The Tianluokeng cluster entry is ¥90 per person. A Nanjing County combined ticket covering multiple clusters costs ¥120-150.
Getting there from Zhangzhou: Buses from Zhangzhou South Bus Station to Shuyang (书洋) in Nanjing County, approximately 1.5 hours, tickets ¥25-35. From Shuyang, local taxis reach Tianluokeng in 15 minutes (¥20-30). Alternatively, organised day tours from Zhangzhou or Xiamen are convenient.
Yongding Tulou Cluster: Further west (approximately 2.5 hours from Zhangzhou), Yongding County has the highest concentration of Tulou including the Hakka Tulou Cluster (洪坑土楼) with over 360 Tulou in the county. Entry to main clusters: ¥90-130. Requires an overnight stay or very early start.
Zhangpu Flower Fields (漳浦花卉)
The most spectacular and least-known feature of the Zhangzhou area is the flower sea in late February to early March. The Yunxiao County (云霄县) and Zhangpu County agricultural areas become carpeted in blooming fields — poppies, rapeseed, cherry blossoms, and other ornamental flowers planted by farmers for the cut-flower trade — that stretch across the coastal plain in a display that rivals the famous Luoping rapeseed fields in Yunnan.
Timing: This is hyper-seasonal. The blooms in Yunxiao typically peak in late February; the rapeseed fields peak in early March. Check current bloom reports (Weibo and WeChat accounts dedicated to flower watching have real-time updates).
Access: Yunxiao County is about 80km southwest of Zhangzhou city by expressway (1-1.5 hours). Local buses and hired transport serve the main flower areas. Admission to specific farm viewing areas: ¥20-50, or free for roadside viewing.
Photography: The flower fields with agricultural village buildings behind them, photographed in the morning light, produce images that are quite extraordinary. Rental bicycles are available near the main areas for cycling through the fields.
Zhangzhou Old Town
The historic core of Zhangzhou city has several features worth exploring:
Zhangzhou Ancient Road (古道): The traditional commercial street area around Xinhua North Road (新华北路) retains several Ming and Qing dynasty buildings, traditional shophouses, and the famous Zhangzhou Wooden Puppetry tradition (布袋木偶戏, Bu Dai Mu Ou Xi) which originates here.
Nanjing Temple (南靖天后宫): One of the most significant Mazu (sea goddess) temples in Fujian, reflecting the maritime history and ancestral connections to Taiwan and Southeast Asia.
Dongshan Island (东山岛): About 1.5 hours by bus south of Zhangzhou, Dongshan Island has one of Fujian’s most beautiful beaches (Mapi Bay, 马銮湾) and the Wind-Carved Rock formation (风动石) — a precarious boulder balanced on a cliff edge. Entry to Wind-Carved Rock scenic area: ¥50. The island also has excellent seafood restaurants.
Seafood and Local Food
Southern Fujian produces some of China’s best seafood, and Zhangzhou sits in the middle of some of the richest coastal fishing grounds on the Taiwan Strait.
Oysters (生蚝): Zhangzhou and the coastal counties are major oyster producers. Grilled oysters with garlic are a standard barbecue item: ¥3-6 each. Raw oysters are also served at coastal restaurants.
Shipjack tuna preparations (花鱼): A local fish preparation using a particular marinade and drying technique. Served as a side dish, strong umami flavour.
Mian Xian Hu (面线糊): A thick, comforting noodle soup made with thin rice vermicelli and various seafood and pork toppings. A breakfast staple in Fujian coastal cities, ¥8-15 per bowl.
Shazhi Fish (沙质鱼): Light white fish from the coastal mudflats prepared in a distinctive Zhangzhou style — steamed with particular seasonings.
Night seafood markets: The coastal areas of Dongshan Island and Zhangpu have excellent night markets where fresh seafood is cooked to order. Budget ¥80-150 per person for a proper seafood spread.
Getting to Zhangzhou
From Xiamen: This is the most common arrival point. Xiamen to Zhangzhou by high-speed train: approximately 30-35 minutes, tickets ¥20-35. Frequent services throughout the day. Alternatively, buses from various Xiamen terminals run frequently and take about 1 hour.
From Fuzhou: High-speed rail approximately 1.5-2 hours.
From Guangzhou: High-speed rail approximately 3.5-4 hours.
Within Zhangzhou: Taxis (¥7 starting fare), Didi, and local buses. For day trips to Tulou or flower fields, hiring a private car driver (¥300-500 per day) gives the most flexibility.
Where to Stay
Zhangzhou city: Budget hotels near the bus and train stations, ¥100-200 per night. Mid-range options (Holiday Inn Express, GreenTree Inn), ¥200-350 per night. Proximity to bus stations is convenient for day trip logistics.
Near Tulou in Nanjing County: Guesthouses within Tulou buildings — staying inside a Tulou compound is the definitive experience. Several historic Tulou now offer guesthouse rooms: ¥120-300 per night. Book ahead for spring and October.
Practical Tips for 2026
Tulou peak season: Spring (April-May) and October are the most popular periods for Tulou visits. Weekends in these periods can be busy. Weekday morning visits in shoulder season are most enjoyable.
Flower field season: Late February to mid-March is a narrow window. Be prepared to adjust plans based on actual bloom conditions.
Language: Minnan (Hokkien) dialect is widely spoken. Mandarin is understood everywhere. English is limited outside Xiamen connections.
Combine with Xiamen: A classic Fujian itinerary is 2 nights Xiamen + 1 night Zhangzhou (for Tulou) + optional Dongshan Island overnight for beach. Total 4-5 days covers the highlights of southern Fujian.
Zhangzhou is the kind of city that rewards a short detour from Xiamen. The Tulou alone justify the 30-minute train ride, but the flower fields in late winter and the seafood culture of the coastal areas add real dimensions to a southern Fujian itinerary.
