The first accommodation decision for the Guilin-Yangshuo region is which town to base yourself in. Many visitors split their time between both, but if you’re choosing one, understand what you’re choosing between: Guilin is the transit hub with more hotel options and better transport connections; Yangshuo is the destination with the immediate karst scenery, the cycling and kayaking culture, the backpacker scene, and much cheaper prices. For pure experience, Yangshuo wins almost every time.

Guilin City: Why You Might Stay Here
Guilin (桂林) is the regional transport hub — trains and flights connect here rather than Yangshuo. The city has a pleasant central lake area (Banyan Lake and Fir Lake, 两湖, liǎng hú) surrounded by karst peaks, good restaurants, and the full range of hotel options from budget to international luxury.
Why stay in Guilin:
- Arriving late by train or flight and needing the first night before moving on
- Flying in and out without a fixed schedule
- Preferring full international hotel amenities (Guilin has Marriott, Sheraton, and other chains)
- Planning day trips to the Reed Flute Cave, Elephant Trunk Hill (象鼻山), and Fubo Hill without basing in Yangshuo
Price range in Guilin:
- Budget domestic hotel: ¥150-300/night
- Mid-range: ¥400-800/night
- International chain luxury: ¥800-1,800/night
The best Guilin hotel neighbourhoods: Near the city’s twin lakes in the centre, within walking distance of the main sights. The lakeside properties have pleasant evening atmosphere.
The Li River Boat Trip Logistics
The famous Li River (漓江) cruise from Guilin to Yangshuo (the 4-hour boat journey through the karst peaks that you’ve seen on the 20 yuan banknote) starts from Zhujiang Pier (竹江码头) about 20km south of Guilin city. If you’re doing this trip, you need to either stay in Guilin (and take a bus to the pier) or overnight in Yangshuo (and the boat drops you off in town). Most visitors do the boat from Guilin to Yangshuo and then stay in Yangshuo for 1-3 nights.
Yangshuo Town: The Place to Be
Yangshuo (阳朔) sits at the end of the Li River cruise in the heart of the karst landscape. From the town streets, the limestone peaks rise directly from the ground — you don’t have to go anywhere to see them.
The town has been a backpacker hub since the 1980s and the tourist infrastructure is well-developed, but in a way that’s genuinely useful rather than overbuilt. Bike hire, kayaking, rock climbing tours, cooking classes, and the Li River village cycle routes are all accessible from town.
Price range in Yangshuo town:
- Hostel dorm: ¥50-90/night
- Budget private room: ¥150-280/night
- Mid-range guesthouse: ¥300-600/night
- Higher-end boutique: ¥600-1,200/night
What to Look for in Yangshuo Accommodation
The most important thing to get right in Yangshuo is the view. Many properties advertise “mountain views” — the quality of this varies enormously. The best rooms look directly at the karst peaks from a window, balcony, or rooftop. The worst have a partial glimpse of rock behind another building.
Ask specifically: “Does the room have a direct view of karst mountains from the window or balcony?” The photos on booking platforms are often the best views in the property, not necessarily from your specific room.
West Street Area (西街, Xī Jiē)
The main tourist street in Yangshuo town. Dense with restaurants, bars, souvenir shops, and guesthouses. The atmosphere is lively and international; it’s also relatively loud at night.
Guesthouses and hostels here are convenient for everything and slightly more expensive than properties one or two streets back. Budget and mid-range options from ¥150-500/night.
Quieter Lanes Behind West Street
The lanes running off West Street in any direction get noticeably quieter within 200 metres. Properties here offer better sleep, lower prices, and still 5-minute walking distance to the restaurant and bar options. The better value choice for most visitors.
The Yulong River Countryside: The Truly Stunning Option
The Yulong River (遇龙河) area, stretching 16km west from Yangshuo town through rice paddies and bamboo groves between karst peaks, has the most spectacular accommodation settings in the entire region.
Countryside guesthouses and boutique hotels here are set directly in the fields, with unobstructed karst views in every direction. Waking up in this landscape is a genuinely different experience from anything in the town.
The trade-off: You’ll need a bicycle (20-30 minute ride to Yangshuo town) or motorcycle taxi (¥15-25 per trip) to get anywhere. Restaurants are limited to your guesthouse and a few village options. If you’re happy to commit to a rural base with the extraordinary setting, this is the right choice.
Price range: ¥300-800/night for the better countryside boutiques with mountain views. Some high-end properties charge ¥1,500-3,000/night.
Specific areas: The villages around Xingping (兴坪) to the northeast of Yangshuo are less visited than the Yulong River area and have some exceptional guesthouses with even better views of the Li River meander (the 20 yuan banknote view is from Xingping). ¥250-600/night at smaller family-run properties.
Which Properties Actually Deliver the View
Being honest about what the karst mountain view advertisements mean:
Town-centre Yangshuo: Some genuine view rooms exist, particularly on upper floors of taller guesthouses. But many “mountain view” rooms have partial views through other buildings.
West Street area rooftop bars/rooms: The best town-centre views are from rooftop terraces of multi-storey guesthouses. Properties that explicitly offer rooftop seating are usually genuine.
Yulong River countryside: Almost everything has a genuine view because there’s nothing to block it. The view is omnidirectional. If you’re staying in a countryside property and don’t have mountains visible from the window, the property is poorly situated.
Xingping village area: The best Li River meander views in the region. Early morning bamboo raft and mist views are exceptional.
Practical Notes
Getting to Yangshuo from Guilin: High-speed train takes 20 minutes (¥25). Bus takes 60-90 minutes (¥25-35). The train is always faster. The new Guilin West high-speed station is the relevant departure point.
Best time to visit: Spring (April-May) for green fields and good light; September-October for clear skies after the rainy season. July-August is monsoon season — the karst scenery is often misty but also dramatically atmospheric.
Booking ahead: October Golden Week is the busiest period. Book 4-6 weeks ahead for better Yangshuo properties in that window. Other times, 1-2 weeks ahead is sufficient for most options.
Electric bicycle hire: ¥50-80/day for an electric bike in Yangshuo town. Essential for the Yulong River area. Most guesthouses can organise hire.
