Huanglong (黄龙, Yellow Dragon) Scenic Area in northern Sichuan is one of China’s most visually extraordinary natural landscapes — a 3.6km travertine cascade of 3,400 coloured pools at elevations between 3,145m and 3,577m. The calcium carbonate deposit system creates pools ranging from turquoise to emerald to gold in colour, set within a forested gorge with snow peaks visible above.
Huanglong is UNESCO World Heritage Site listed alongside Jiuzhaigou — and less visited, making it the better experience for most discerning travellers.
The Landscape
Huanglong’s pools form as calcite-saturated water from underground springs flows over the valley floor and deposits calcium carbonate, building the rimstone dam formations that contain each pool. Over thousands of years, this process creates a natural staircase system — similar to the Plitvice Lakes in Croatia but at higher altitude and at larger scale.
The colour variations come from: algae (contributing greens and blues), the calcite itself (white and yellow), reflected sky, and varying water depths.
The main cascade: The primary Huanglong Valley section is 2.5km long. The top section (Huanglong Temple area, 3,577m) has the most dense pool concentration — over 400 pools in the final section.
The Altitude Challenge
Huanglong is at the base level 3,145m with the path ascending to 3,577m. This is significant altitude — most visitors, even those who handle everyday altitude fine, will notice breathlessness and slower pace at the upper section.
Practical altitude management:
- Acclimatise 1–2 nights in Chengdu or Songpan (2,850m) before visiting
- Walk slowly; the path does not reward speed and the altitude is not to be pushed against
- Oxygen canisters (氧气罐) available at the scenic area entrance and within the park. ¥50–80 per canister. Not obligatory but provides comfort for those sensitive to altitude.
- Drink extra water; avoid alcohol the night before
Cable car: A cable car ascends to the upper section (3,300m) — highly recommended for visitors who want to see the most spectacular upper pools without a full altitude ascent on foot. The walk down is significantly easier.
Combining with Jiuzhaigou
Huanglong and Jiuzhaigou are 120km apart on the same mountain road — most visitors combine both in a 3–4 day circuit from Chengdu.
Standard itinerary:
- Day 1: Chengdu → drive to Huanglong (5 hours) → visit Huanglong (half day) → drive to Songpan for overnight
- Day 2: Songpan → Jiuzhaigou (1.5 hours) → full day in Jiuzhaigou
- Day 3: Jiuzhaigou → southern valley section → drive back to Chengdu (5 hours)
Flying: The Jiuzhaigou Huanglong Airport (九寨黄龙机场, 3,448m — one of the world’s highest commercial airports) serves both sites. Flights from Chengdu (30 min), Beijing, Shanghai. The airport at altitude means the flight itself provides altitude acclimatisation and saves the road journey.
Best Season
April–June: Spring wildflowers in the lower valley sections, snow patches on the rim peaks.
September–October: Autumn colour + peak pool colour intensity. Most spectacular season but also most visited.
November–March: Snow conditions, reduced visitor numbers. Many pools freeze partially; the ice formations add different beauty. Some cable cars closed in heavy snow.
Avoid July–August: Peak Chinese tourist season, maximum altitude adaptation challenge in summer heat.
