Huangguoshu (黄果树, “Yellow Fruit Tree”) Waterfall is China’s largest — 77 metres tall, 101 metres wide, with a walkable cave behind the curtain of falling water. The surrounding Guizhou karst landscape contains dozens of additional falls and the Tianxing Bridge Scenic Area cave systems, making the Anshun (安顺) region one of the most concentrated waterfall landscapes anywhere.
Huangguoshu Waterfall
The cascade: 77m tall, 101m wide at peak flow. For context, Niagara Falls is taller (51–57m) but comparable in width. Huangguoshu’s volume varies dramatically by season.
Water Cave (水帘洞): The defining feature — a 134m walkway behind the waterfall curtain, inside the limestone cliff. The experience of walking through the mist behind falling water, with the curtain illuminated by afternoon light, is genuinely extraordinary. This is what distinguishes Huangguoshu from most waterfalls.
Best season: Summer (July–September) for maximum flow — the full width and height in operation. Spring and autumn for lower but still impressive flows. Winter: significantly reduced.
The Broader Huangguoshu Scenic Area
The scenic area isn’t just the main waterfall — it’s a connected system of 18 falls across the Baihe River and its tributaries:
Doupotang Waterfall (陡坡塘): 105m wide (wider than the main fall), 21m tall — the widest waterfall in China. A different visual character from the tall main fall.
Tianxing Bridge (天星桥) Scenic Area: 3km downstream — a karst water park where the river flows through a maze of limestone formations, with suspension bridges, subterranean passages, and forested islands. Often the most scenic section by visitor consensus.
Anshun City and Surroundings
Anshun is a mid-size city with the Buyi (布依族) and Miao minority communities throughout its rural areas. The surrounding villages maintain traditional architectural styles.
Anshun Batik: The Buyi people of Anshun are famous for their batik (蜡染, wax-resist dyeing) textile tradition. Several villages near Anshun produce hand-made batik cloth; the Anshun market sells contemporary and traditional batik designs.
Longgong Cave (龙宫景区): Boat tour through a cave system with underground lake — the longest navigable cave tour in China (2.5km). Combines well with Huangguoshu.
Getting There
Guiyang (贵阳) is Guizhou’s capital and transport hub — 2 hours by HSR from Chongqing, 4 hours from Chengdu, 2.5 hours from Guilin.
Anshun is 1.5 hours from Guiyang by HSR (安顺西站, Anshun West station). The Huangguoshu scenic area is 30 minutes by taxi from Anshun.
Day trip from Guiyang: Possible but rushed (4 hours total transport). Better to overnight in Anshun.
